Sewing summer sun hats part 2

The perfect hat!

The perfect bucket hat
The perfect hat in action 1

Here are two shots of the hat in action. The pattern makes a reversible hat but I made the lining black, which isn't so useful. It will really heat up in the summer sun. But the black offers better UV protection. And it was the fabric I had on hand (recycled from a pair of cotton pants whose zipper had broken).

Sewing summer sun hats

I started making a sunhat for my toddler back in the spring. The first pattern I used was based on a hat he already had that I quite liked but was afraid he was growing out of. I made a couple hats with that pattern, but they weren't quite right (I'm now wearing the one below myself).

Then I tried a reversible sun hat where I didn't have to cut out a separate brim. But I had a hard time getting the fit right.

Next  I came across a free pattern for a reversible bucket hat by Oliver + S. I made one in the largest size, and it was too small (I'm convinced I read the pattern incorrectly, because it said this size should fit a six year old). But the hat was lovely--it looked sharper than the styles of hat I had experimented with up to that point.

So I made the pattern bigger and I think I finally have the hat. I will add a picture once I sew up the one in the plaid fabric I've been wanting to use. Below is the prototype (I added the chin strap because it kept blowing off his head).

Vintage crib sheet

I made a sweet vintage find of some Empire Strikes Back top sheets at the thrift store near my house. Then I found this MADE tutorial for making crib sheets. And the Darth Vader crib sheet was born. (This photo doesn't do justice to how large Darth Vader is in comparison to everyone else on the sheets.)

Recycled t-shirt scarf

Saturday afternoon is crafty afternoon! Today I made a scarf out of an old shirt, following a pattern from Save This Shirt by Hannah Rogge. This is a genius way to use old shirts/t-shirts that have lost their zip or that never fit right.  I can't decide whether to keep it for myself or share it--and it's probably not appropriate to post pics of potential gifts here. But it turned out so well that I can't help posting a photo.

Kleenex Box Blocks

This is not very crafty, but it's an idea I had for home-made blocks that also keep us from having to recycle Kleenex boxes right away.
They are a bit of a bear to store, but they allow me to both re-use and then recycle. Plus I think they're kinda pretty.

Fantastic hat!

I did not make the hat that is being worn in this pic, but somebody did and it's too fabulous not to share.

Holiday knitting!

I found a little time to start the holiday crafts. This didn't turn out like the Santa hat pictured in the pattern (I had to substitute sparkly yarn for fluffy white yarn), but it's not too shabby for a first try.
